MCS-150

Motor Carrier Identification Report

A form filed with the FMCSA that collects essential information about a motor carrier's operations and must be updated biennially or when business information changes.

The MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) is a form required by the FMCSA that collects key information about a motor carrier's operations, including the carrier's legal name, address, type of operation, number of vehicles, number of drivers, and the types of cargo transported. This information is used by the FMCSA to maintain accurate records for safety oversight and regulatory purposes.

All motor carriers with an active USDOT number are required to update their MCS-150 form biennially (every two years). The update month is determined by the last digit of your USDOT number: 1 for January, 2 for February, and so on through 0 for October. Additionally, carriers must file an updated MCS-150 within 30 days of any significant changes to their business information, such as a change in address, legal name, or type of operation.

Failure to file the biennial update on time can result in your USDOT number being deactivated by the FMCSA. Once deactivated, you cannot legally operate until your registration is reinstated. The FMCSA sends reminder notices, but it is ultimately the carrier's responsibility to ensure timely updates. Filing can be done through the FMCSA's online portal or through a filing service provider.
